Rush Reunion 2010 A Family Gathering on Friday.

Not sure who is in charge of the website but wanted to add some info about the family picnic on Friday at our house.

The picnic will start around 4:00pm but if anyone is in town and "bored" we'd love to have them drop in earlier. We can always use help in setting up. We will be supplying hamburgers and hotdogs, lemonade and ice tea. We are asking everyone to bring "munchies", (chips, cheese and crackers, etc.), fruit, a salad or desert or anything else that will compliment the meal. We are planning on a few rousing games of volleyball, bocchi ball, ladderball, etc. We'll have a fire going later on for those who would like s'mores and good conversation.

Here is a list of activities for the week.

The main reunion of the very large family will be held Saturday, Aug. 21, at St. Benedict’s old schoolyard.

Activities during the week will include: Aug. 16, climb Traveler Mountain in Baxter State Park; Aug. 17, Penobscot River rafting trip; Aug. 18, kayaking trip; Aug. 19, golf outing; Aug. 20, smaller family gatherings.

It appears the box lunch and the price tag of fifty dollars has really upset and turned off a number of people and as I stated that was never my intention. I know full well that one cannot please everyone and only a fool will try so call me a fool if you want but rather than the box lunch, we will go back to what worked for the last four gatherings and ask everyone to please bring a covered dish of your choice on Saturday. For those of you that are coming from far away and are staying at a motel where it is not possible to create something it would be a big help if you could bring some fruit like a water melon or grapes for all to share. Because of this last minute change I am not real sure of what kind of food to expect but knowing how wonderful the people of Benedicata and Sherman are when it comes to this kind of function I am sure it will all work out. In the past outings we had Lisa Rush to coordinate this but we do not have here this time. If there is a person who would like to coordinate the food please let us know.

Instead of fifty dollars per family if twenty five is not a burden that should cover the cost of the paper plates forks knives etc along with water soda and beer. It should also be enough to pay for the porta-johns and the facility. Out of this money, we will also purchase hot dogs that we will steam so that no one will have to slave over a stove or grill that day.

For all of you that have sent in their money we will credit your money towards the cost of the t-shirts you ordered and if you did not order, any we will give you a refund on Saturday.

Good Day to you all. I must say thanks to all that put on the 175th Anniversary Celebration of Benedicta as I had a wonderful time and met a number of people there. Thanks for all the chats to various ones of my grandfather and the discussions of the town as a whole. I really enjoyed it. Now that that has come and gone it is time to plan ahead for the upcoming reunion. Aug. 16, 2010 will start the week off with various day trips such as hiking Mt. Katahdin, canoeing and kayaking, white water rafting, golfing, and on Friday the day before the reunion we will individual family gatherings as it will be a perfect to meet up with each other and for picture taking as well. Good Day All,
Hope you all are enjoying the summer. Please don't forget to mark your calendar for next Aug. for hopefully our biggest reunion yet. The daily events will start Monday the 16 and be similiar to what they had in 2005. Hiking Mt. Katahdin, golfing, shopping, white water rafting and the smaller reunions the day before the big event. The smaller reunions were a big hit the last time and it gave people the opportunity to socialize and get photos of their linage. George Benedict Qualey

BENEDICTA - George Benedict Qualey, 88, left this world May 23, 2009, to rejoin his wife, Ella Qualey, and his daughter, Angela Qualey, who beat him to the race to heaven. He was born Nov. 28, 1920, in Benedicta, to Andrew and Elizabeth (Rush) Qualey. George's two main passions in life were spending time with the ones he loved and enjoying the great outdoors. He was a dedicated father of 12 children, and a proud grandfather to 44 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, with whom he shared his remarkable love for all of God's creations. George lived his life in accordance with three simple principles; time is a precious commodity to be spent wisely and purposefully; mankind is the assigned caretakers of this world, not its supreme ruler; and living in harmony with nature is not only advisable, it is necessary to living a healthy balanced existence. Those who knew George know he was a master gardener, avid trapper and hunter, and devout nature watcher. Observing and nurturing all of God's creations was his life passion. Throughout life, George faced many challenges and without fail he came out victorious with a crooked smile on his face and love in his heart. He epitomized true wisdom and appreciation for life. George used his deep awareness of the significance of life to light sparks in the hearts of all he knew. As in all aspects of nature, the time has come for the torch to be passed. In honor of George's life we must let the sparks be kindled by our protector, our teacher and our coach, burn bright and light the torch for the next generation. Teach love and respect for all of God's creations, be conscious of how you spend your time and remember that it is family that kept George here for so long, and it is that same family that will keep his memory alive until, in heaven, we meet again. Family may call 10-11 a.m. Friday at St. Benedict's Catholic Church, Benedicta, where funeral services will begin 11 a.m. Bowers Funeral Home, Island Falls.

John "Buck" McAvoy
STACYVILLE - John "Buck" McAvoy went to be with his Lord Saturday, April 11, 2009, surrounded by his loving family. Buck was born Dec. 15, 1925, in Benedicta. "Buck" earned his nickname honestly because he did his hunting by moonlight in his early years. He was known to all as a lover of hard work and ran his family logging business for more than 60 years. Until the day he retired, Buck believed his business was to be run by a handshake and his word; a good day in the woods was spent on his D-7 bulldozer. He was happiest when his home was filled with his family and friends and especially rejoiced when a baby came along. He made each grandchild feel like they were his favorite. Buck is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Isabelle McNally of Sherman. He is also survived by nine children, Rick McAvoy and wife, Mary, of Mount Chase, Billy McAvoy and wife, Sue, of Sherman, Debbie Patterson and husband, Wayne, of Austin, Texas, Lisa Rush and husband, Greg, of Sherman, Chris McAvoy of Brewer, Becky Hughes and husband, Wayne, of Stacyville, Shawn McAvoy and wife, Kelley, of Patten, Scott McAvoy of Stacyville, and Michelle Robinson and husband, Kevin, of Saco. His life was blessed with 16 grandchildren, Ryan McAvoy, Oliver and Zak McAvoy, Amy Cyr, Lisa Harvey, Mary Stelly, Seth and Ben Rush, Meghan Hammock, Katie and Mallory McAvoy, Kylie Holman, Alex McAvoy, Casey McAvoy, Isabella and Austin Robinson. He was also blessed with numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Buck is survived by one brother, Joe McAvoy and wife, Lil, of Silver Ridge. He was predeceased by his mother, Beulah Casey McAvoy and father, Joseph of Benedicta; 10 brothers and sisters. His family thanks the staff of Houlton Regional Hospital for their compassionate long-term care. Special thanks to Dr. Ted Sussman for his professional yet compassionate care of our beloved husband and dad. Friends may call 6-9 p.m. Monday at St. Benedict's Catholic Church, Benedicta, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday with Father Joel Cyr, celebrant. Update on George Qualey

To all of you George Qualey is my grandfather and his parents were Andrew Francis Qualey and Elizabeth Agnes Rush. He is in Millinocket Memorial hospital and not doing well at all. So I apologize ahead of time if I don't respond right away. He has been in there for 2 weeks and expected two more weeks is all that is allowed then he will go to Aunt Sue's until the end. I am having a hard time as I love him so and I am not ready to part ways. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

5th Rush Reunion Aug. 21, 2010

As we are approaching spring and looking forward to our outings with friends and family let us all not forget the reunion that will take place next Aug. 2010. I know it is a ways away but with all the people that will be attending we would like to get the registration started and looking into booking our lodging etc.

To all those who can trace their roots back to Johann Dietrich Rush (Rasche) from Stelle Germany and whose final resting place is Benedicta Maine.Mark your calendars for Saturday August 21 2010 as the date for the fifth Rush (Rasche) Family Reunion in Benedicta Maine.

This as stated above will be our fifth reunion and with everyone’s help, it will be the best yet. I realize that there are still some that do not have email so we will send one mailing to all those families that we do not have an email address for letting them know the date and the web site and for better or for worse they will be on their own to stay abreast after that mailing. I am sorry to have to do that but it is just too timely and cost ineffective to have to do both.

Since we had so much success at our last reunion with a day for white water rafting, mountain climbing and we should not forget the longest golf game in history as well as a day for just smaller family reunions we will develop a similar format for this reunion as well. We may add a day on the river in either canoes or kayaks.

We will offer t-shirts again and if anyone has any ideas for the t-shirt for this reunion please send in your ideas.

Over the last few years, I have run into so many people who have told me that they look forward to this reunion and I thank you all for that. I hope that in 2010 we can finally get over a thousand people to join us in Benedicta. If we can get the Duffy family to join us along with the Fitzpatrick family form Houlton I am sure we will have no trouble making that number.

When we did the smaller reunions the day before the last one that seemed to have gone over very well so I would hope that this extra so to speak reunion would entice families like the Duffy and Fitzpatrick to join us. There are many who enjoy following their genealogy and what better way than to bring a great number together to try and figure it all out.

May God bless and keep us all safe until we meet again on August 21 2010 in Benedicta Maine.

I am compiling the book of all descendants of John D and Sarah Rush. I still need some family information and am so thankful for all that have replied thus far as there are too many to name.

Here are a few pictures for you all to see. These are my dad's prize possessions. He went to Zimbabwe for 16 days. He had a wonderful time and yes he did bring the critters back to put in his den. The only one that isn't into a head mount is the Zebra that was done into a rug.

This little guy was so precious but they are so fast they are hard to shoot so that was what enticed him to land this little one. They travel an average of 50 mph

All of the animals he shot with one shot except the wilder beast which took him two shots.

Obituary for Susan Lewis-Brooks

Susan J. Lewis-Brooks, 54, of Weatogue, loving wife of Michael Brooks, passed away peacefully in her home on Tuesday, January 20, 2009. Susan was born on August 1, 1954 in Houlton, ME, the daughter of the late William and Helen (Corrigan) Lewis. Susan was a graduate of Saint Michaels College and worked many years for Aetna and Travelers. She is survived by her beloved son, John M. Brooks of West Hartford; her sisters, Ann Kyriacou of Hanover, PA, Rose Mary Irwin of Middleboro, MA, Cathy Humphrey of Rochester, NY, Jane Harrington of Wilbraham, MA, Jude Hogan of Hamilton, MA; two brothers, William Lewis of Woburn, MA and Fred Lewis of Lowell, MA, and numerous nieces and nephews. No person had a bigger heart than Susan, always thinking about what she could do for others. Few people could boast the courage, determination and indomitable spirit that let her survive where lesser souls would have given up the fight. May God give her peaceful repose in his blessed arms in recognition of all that she endured on earth, always with character, dignity, hope, and grace. John D. Rush Jr. and Sarah Woodlock

Kenneth Woodock has contacted me and wanted to know if I more information on his grandfather's sister Sarah who married John D. Rush Jr.

This is what I have and I know there is more out there so I am will post here what I have and if anyone knows more of the family would you please email me so I may add it to the family tree so no one is left out. Kenneth and his family, myself and many others would greatly appreciate it.

John D. Rush Jr. dob. 08-02-1868 Benedicta, ME married Sarah Woodlock 05-23-1896. Sarah's dob is 01-22-1866 in Benedicta, ME. They had two children Mary Geneva Rush dob 12-13-1897 Benedicta, ME and John Herbert Rush dob 03-31-1899 Benedicta, ME.

Mary Geneva Rush I have her marrying Daniel Jameson. I do not know if they had any children. Mary passed away 03-01-1973 in Everett, MA.

I came across this Bangor Daily News obituary when I googled my father’s name. I’m Harold Qualey’s daughter from Norwalk, Ct and now live with my husband & 2 sons in Upton, Ma. which is about 45 minutes west of Boston. I am a retired kindergarten teacher and both of my sons go to the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

We used to stay at Frank’s house when our family made the 9 hour drive to Benedicta. Gilbert was my godfather and Hazel & Nora used to spend the holidays at our house in Norwalk each year.

Now that both boys are away at college and my husband & I are retired, I have often wanted to take a ride up the Maine coast and show my husband Benedicta and seen how it has changed. I’m sure I wouldn’t recognize anything but I have such pleasant memories of our family trips.

Hi....I just received an email re the upcoming reunion, and I was looking over your website. My grandmother was one of seven daughters born to Sarah and Alexander MacDonald....her name was Mary Flora MacDonald and she married Thomas J. O'Driscoll from County Cork, Ireland in Lewiston....and he later dropped the "O". Three of the sisters married Sullivan brothers. Annie Elizabeth married John, Teresa Estella married Florance, Nellie married Dan. Sarah (Sanie) married Herbert Young. Maria, the youngest and Katie, the second youngest, I believe died young and never married. I have a very old photograph of the seven which I believe was taken in Benedicta. It has all their names on the back in my grandmother's handwriting. She had eight children: Lillian, Robert, Sister Marie Benedicta, Teresa, and John (my father). The other three died before the age of 1 and are buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Lewiston, ME.

I thought I would blog this morning as we are snowed in here in So. China, ME with 18 inches of snow. Thank heavens we are delayed this morning. I wanted to thank Kevin V. Gantnier Sr. for passing on information on Ellen M. Rush. He is the son of Vernon Gantnier. For the Gantnier family as there is no forum yet for you all to communicate Kevin V. Gantnier Sr. has set up a website www.gantnier.com which has a forum there. I will be posting the Rush Reunion genealogy query on that site as well for that particular linage. My father Phil Qualey's final day at UPS. He retired after 38 years of service. Here is a picture of his final trip to Mass. He also received a plaque from Mack for his 3 million miles driven over the course of his 38 years there. 3 million miles = 120 times around the world. Dad, Congrats on your retirement as we are so proud of you.

Just one more interesting thing to add. I have a beautiful Christening gown that has been passed down through the family. It was made by Katie MacDonald (my grandmother's second youngest sister) in 1893. It is entirely handmade of muslim and lace....my Dad and his brothers and sisters were all christened in it, as well as my two children, and now my grandaughter. Picture attached.

Just a note for all of you. I am coordinating with a group of area hotels/motels in the surrounding areas of Sherman, Houlton, Island Falls, Patten, Millinocket to set up group rates. We are about 8 months away from booking rooms as most only are allowing 50 weeks ahead of time. Once they have confirmed things I will post them for you. MILLINOCKET - Eugene Rush, 86, died at his home here Friday evening. Rush was born in Benedicta, Aug. 21, 1881, the youngest son of John and Catherine (Crabbe) Rush. Rush lived here for 69 years and was the owner of the Eugene Rush Dry Goods Store on Penobscot Avenue for 56 years, retiring 10 years ago. He was a communicant of St. Martin of Tours Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Maude (Bishop) Rush of Millinocket; one son, James Paul of Portland; two daughters, Mrs. Jane Montgomery of Millinocket and Sister Rose Mary, R.S.M., of Portland; nine grandchildren. Friends may call at the residence, 91 Pine Street here, Saturday from 4-9 p.m. and Sunday 2-9 p.m. A High Mass of Requiem will be sung at St. Martin of Tours Church Monday at 10 a.m. Burial will be in the Millinocket Cemetery. He was formerly employed as a police officer for the town of Millinocket, and was later employed at Great Northern Paper Co., Millinocket, until his retirement in 1970. He was a member of the Millinocket Lodge of Elks No. 1521 and a life-member of St. Martin of Tours Council No. 680, Knights of Columbus. He is survived by two sons, Donald of Milford, Conn., and Michael of Millinocket; two brothers, Richard and Bernard Rush, both of Millinocket; two sisters, Agnes Bishop and Irene Miller, also of Millinocket; six grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Frances (Civiello) Rush, in 1985. Friends may call at the James G. Dowd Funeral Home, Millinocket 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wedensday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, Little Flower Circle, Daughters of Isabella, will say the rosary 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
